Privacy Policy

Last updated: 2026-09-03

This policy explains what Online Ruler Tools does and does not collect. The short version: the tools run entirely in your browser, and nothing you measure is ever sent to us.

Who is responsible for your data

Online Ruler Tools is operated by an individual sole trader, who is the data controller for the limited processing described below. You can reach us at hello@onlinerulertools.com about anything in this policy. We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as the scale and nature of this processing does not require one.

What we do not collect

We do not ask you to create an account, and there is nothing to sign up for. We do not collect your name, email address, phone number or payment details, because we never ask for them. There are no forms on this site. The contact page is a plain email link that opens your own mail application.

Every measurement you take happens on your device. Your ruler readings, screen measurements and calibration are computed in your browser and are never transmitted, logged or stored on any server we control.

Data stored on your own device

The tools save two small values in your browser's local storage so the site is usable on your next visit:

Both stay on your device, are readable only by this site, and are never uploaded. You can erase them at any time by clearing your browser's site data for this domain, or by using the "Use default" button in the calibration dialog.

Hosting and server logs

This site is static and served by Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address, browser user-agent and the URL requested, in order to deliver the page and to protect against abuse and denial-of-service attacks. We do not have access to an identifiable log of individual visitors, and we do not build profiles from this data. Cloudflare's own privacy practices are described in the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.

Analytics

This site currently runs no analytics of any kind. No analytics scripts are loaded and no analytics cookies are set. If that changes, this section will be updated to describe exactly what is used before the change goes live.

Advertising

No advertising is served on this site at present, and no advertising cookies are set. We intend to fund the tools with advertising rather than a paywall, and this section will describe the advertising provider and your opt-out choices before any ads appear.

Cookies

We set no cookies of our own. At present no third-party services that set cookies are loaded either, so a visit to this site sets no cookies at all.

Children

These tools are general-purpose utilities and are not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, including children under 13.

Legal bases for processing (EEA and UK)

Where the GDPR or the UK GDPR applies, we rely on these bases:

We do not rely on contract or legal obligation as a basis, because there is no account and no transaction between us.

International transfers

Our host and, where enabled, the analytics and advertising providers are companies based in or with infrastructure in the United States. Where personal data is transferred out of the EEA or the UK, those transfers rely on the European Commission's adequacy decision for the EU–US Data Privacy Framework where the recipient is certified under it, and otherwise on the Commission's standard contractual clauses together with the UK's international data transfer addendum. We do not ourselves transfer or export any data about you, because we do not hold any.

How long data is kept

We keep nothing. Your calibration and theme preference live in your own browser until you clear them. Server logs are retained by our host for a short period for security purposes under their own policy. Where analytics is enabled, retention is configured to the shortest practical period of 14 months, after which the data is deleted automatically.

Your rights

If the GDPR or UK GDPR applies to you, you have the right to access your personal data, to have it corrected or erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable form, and to withdraw consent at any time where consent is the basis. Exercising any of these costs nothing and we will respond within one month.

In practice there is usually nothing for us to act on: we hold no personal data about you, operate no accounts and build no profiles, so there is no record to retrieve, correct or delete. Where a third party processes data through this site, the opt-out routes given in the sections above are the most direct and immediate way to exercise control. Write to us anyway if you would like this confirmed in writing.

You also have the right to complain to a supervisory authority. In the EEA that is the data protection authority for the country you live or work in; in the UK it is the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk). We would rather you came to us first, but you are not required to.

No automated decision-making

We do not carry out automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal effects for you or that significantly affects you in any other way.

If you are in California

Under the CCPA as amended by the CPRA you have rights to know what personal information is collected, to have it deleted or corrected, and to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell personal information and never have. Personalised advertising can count as "sharing" under those laws, so where advertising is enabled the Google opt-out linked above is the mechanism for exercising that right. We do not discriminate against anyone for exercising it.

Changes to this policy

If the way this site handles data changes, this page will be updated and the date at the top revised. Material changes, such as introducing analytics or advertising, will be reflected here before they take effect.
